It is Pentecost, and the young divorce lawyer Clarin is looking forward to a peaceful long weekend at his holiday house in Tessin, where he is planning to write a journal article. On the first evening, he meets an older man on the terrace of the Hotel Bellavista who seems to be confused. They talk and have long discussions until late in the night. What started as a simple conversation between two people who met by chance turns into a heated, oppressive dynamic which neither Clarin nor the reader can escape. The circumstances in which Loos lost his beloved, nearly deified wife are suspicious, and this loss seems to have made the world a hateful burden for him. Clarin, on the other hand, is carefree and happy. – The two men could not be more different. How close they are to each other is not revealed until later.
