Upper Austria: a “classical” family. The parents are self-righteous and patriotic. Son Franz is well-adjusted; son Egon dares to escape. He escapes to Frankfurt, wanting to become an artist. But it doesn’t turn out that way: he lives through social decay, becomes homeless and turns into a rough sleeper, prostitute, thief and drug addict in the main station. Egon wants to kill himself, but the suicide attempt fails. He returns, homesick – but isn’t well received. For his parents, he is a rotten subject. They give him the “golden shot”. This act is celebrated by the city’s dignitaries with lots of beer. But dead Egon crashes the party and starts a discussion about addiction. At a party like this: complete drunkenness. In the end, everyone has drunk themselves to death. Then a miracle happens: the family rises from the dead and is enlightened. Together in harmony, they take to the air.
