In an old ruined castle, high above the little Croatian seaside village Senj, you will find them – the forgotten children of the city. The call themselves the Uskoks after the most famous knights and sailors of the Adriatic, and they live independently, far away from the influence of the adult world. Under the leadership of Zora, the girl with the flame-red hair, they make their living through trickery. When the penniless semi-orphan Branko Babitsch is accused of theft and locked up in the town prison, the band of Uskoks comes to his rescue and takes him into their ranks. But the conflict between Zora’s gang and the villagers of Senj keeps escalating.
Kurt Held’s adventure novel is a classic of children’s literature and a sincere plea for solidarity and community.
