John von Düffel, Heinrich Mann

The story of the tyrannical high school professor Raat who gets caught up in the web of erotic dancer Rosa Fröhlich und who loses his bourgeois existence in illegal gambling made its author Heinrich Mann famous over night. But Mann was also confronted with hatred, as he himself stated: Even though it might look that way, Professor Unrat is not a figure on the edge of bourgeois society, but rather its representative in extreme cirucmstances.” Heinrich Mann hit the nerve of the pillars of society with his novel which was published in 1904.
The novel became world famous through the film The Blue Angel with Marlene Dietrich.
