Who has hair as black as ebony? Whose stepmother likes her own reflection best? Who is creating havoc in a dwarf community in the dark forest?
It must be Snow White! More than two centuries ago, the Brothers Grimm transcribed the folk tale and printed it in the Kinder- und Hausmärchen (1812). Since then, Snow White has wandered through the dark fairytale forest in numerous adaptations - in operas, animated films, video games and plays.

Helwig Arenz has adapted the material into a wry family play full of humour, stage magic and depth. Snow White is no "damsel in distress", but knows how to hold her own. The tragic rather than malicious stepmother feels abandoned and passes the time with online shopping, and the intrepid prince becomes a somewhat inexperienced young doctor who doesn't know what he's in for in the dangerous, dark forest. A humorous adaptation that brings the fairy tale into the present day and foregrounds the emotional conflict between Snow White and her stepmother.

Arenz emphasizes what could otherwise be too easily forgotten: besides poisoned apples, talking mirrors and dwarfs digging for gold, the fairy tale is about a young woman who has lost her mother and must learn to assert herself in a dangerous world.
