Does one find bliss in unhappiness, in the mundane, in the new, in the accomplished, in coincidence, in destruction, in acting, in desiring or being desired, in triumph or failure, in knowing or not knowing? The characters in Justine del Corte’s play don’t know. Women and men take each other by the hand in a round dance of false hopes. They search, they crave, they rage, they rant, they poise, they try to believe. The woman who wakes up next to a new man every seven years, the man who shouts everyone down snorting, the girl who takes her own virginity. Their characters tell of the pain of daily life, the stupor of triviality, the height of love’s falls, the search for truth and the greed for happiness.
With poetical power Justine del Corte glimpses behind the sham in Der Alptraum vom Glück and, touchingly and with humorous sensitivity, reveals the helplessness of her characters in their lives.
