Der Berliner Gaettong
Stück für Menschen und Puppen
(nach Manier der arte povera)
Nach einem koreanischen Volksstück
UA: 2007 · street theatre group, Seoul · Directed by: Alexis Bug
A play for people and dolls (Arte povera-style)
Inspired by a Korean folk tale

“Berlin, 9 November 1989. German Michel, a West German in the shape of a hare scampers over to the GDR and falls in love with the Eastern German bride, when suddenly a monster appears in the city and abducts the beautiful girl. In his need, Michel calls for Gaettong. But he doesn’t like to help. He doesn’t like humans and least of all Michel. In a cross-fade of Korea and Germany, the play playfully asks the fundamental question of what a unification, in the truest sense of the word, means and how people can free themselves from ideologies of all kinds…” (programme, Guerilla-Theater, Seoul)

The Seoul staging of the Berlin Gaettong of the STT (street theatre group) was a hit with the audiences and the press in Korea. On 9 November 2008, a guest performance was held at the Volksbühne Berlin, and after that the staging was seen at the “7. Festival Politik im Freien Theater” and in the Hamburg Streetfleet.

“An extraordinary result.” (The Hankyoreh daily news)

“This play is here to stay.” (The Korean Theatre Journal)

“Great theatre – but completely different.” (Jan Knopf)
