For Charles Bovary, the wedding was the happiest day of his life. For his wife Emma, it was the beginning of a nightmare. At first, she thought that marriage would give her a sense of life and make her feel love. In fact, Charles is just as unfit as a husband as he is as a doctor. After the couple move to the countryside, Emma's life is dominated by boredom. She compensates for the emptiness by shopping for things she can't afford, and begins having affairs with several men – but reality catches up with her...
