Rattenmenschen
Stück in 4 Akten
2 D, 3 H
UA: 20.06.1996 · Al Schmelz, Steinfort (L) · Directed by: Eva Paulin
During their search for the rat people, Saline, an ambitious geneticist, and social anthropologist Hermann arrive in Brazil. Accompanied by a local, they hope to find the subject of their curiosity there – the rat people, shy beings who live in tunnels they’ve dug in the trash mountains of Sao Paulo.
Elderly actress Karla and filmmaker Gottfried are also searching for the traces of the rat people.
Without knowing about each other, both explorer couples have disguised themselves as rat people. When they meet, they become victims to their acting skills. Karla is sedated by unscrupulous Saline, Hermann and Gottfried try communicating in an invented rat language – until their true identities are revealed. But by now, the hunters have become the hunted, for their local guide has led them astray. Whether the explorers will find their way out of the trash labyrinth remains uncertain.
Oliver Czeslik’s comedy, which is based on true events, is a critical reckoning with European arrogance, overeager scientific curiosity and social imperialism disguised as humanitarian aid.
