The balcony, “the nightingale, and not the lark”, unhappy love with a deadly end; even those who haven’t seen the play know it. It’s about love per se, without compromises and unconditional, which Romeo and Juliet feel for each other. They fall in love in the blink of an eye and the world around them sinks. And it’s about boundless hatred, which serves as a background for the feelings of the loving couple. The Capulets and the Montagues, hostile groups the lovers belong to, meet each other prepared for violence and aggression. Thanks to their love, Romeo and Juliet can break free from the roles ascribed to them, which is their love’s utopian aspect. The impossible seems possible. A subversive process, which their surroundings cannot stand. Then Romeo’s friend Mercutio is killed. Romeo avenges the murder within seconds by committing another murder, and an unstoppable spiral of violence and counter-violence starts. In its relentless machinery, the couple finds their death. So, the unlived love remains as a promise and a legacy for all eternity. (Announcement Maxim Gorki Theater, Berlin)
