Der Glöckner von Notre Dame

Frei nach dem Roman von Victor Hugo

UA: 08.06.1996 · Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel, München · Directed by: Michael Simon
“… looking down on them, his gnome-like eyes beamed with tenderness, pain and compassion, and then rose up again in a flash. Then the women laughed and cried and the crowd stamped their feet in excitement, because in this moment, Quasimodo was truly beautiful. … and with his booming voice, which most people rarely heard and which he never heard himself at all, he called out into the clouds three times in joyful delirium: ‘Asylum’.”
Victor Hugo’s great novel is best known through its monumental Hollywood adaptations, which, through crowd scenes, emphasise the artwork’s epic wealth of material. In contrast, Zaum condenses Hugo’s gothic fairy tale into a dramatic form which intentionally avoids these elements and concentrates on the core of the novel. This core – the murder mystery around Quasimodo and Esmeralda and the portrait of mediaeval society – are laid out anew in Zaum’s succinct dramatization.
