Christmas, 1989. Twenty degrees above freezing, an exceptionally warm December—and perfect weather for a revolution. The communist regime in Rumania starts to topple. In Sibiu/Hermannstadt in Siebenbürgen, over 90 deadly shots are fired. Ceausescu flees, is captured and executed. The opening of the border is near at hand. For the Romanian people, the temptation of freedom is close enough to touch—Germany. Even Hans finds himself on the streets in Sibiu/Hermannstadt, and he explains to his wife, “Outside everything is changing! We really have a chance at a new life!” For him, the journey into the new reality begins—but this journey brings him further away from his home than he ever could have imagined, and at the same time back to where he began. With Die Geister von Amnas, Lothar Kittstein has written a play that asks hard questions about homeland, community, and one’s own goals in life.
