In a poetic, clear language, Wolfram Mehring recounts the moving story of Gerda, Kai and the Snow Queen. His version takes on a unique perspective by trusting the power of the original fairy tale at the same time as looking wisely and cautiously to today’s world. This version of The Snow Queen thus looks fresh and familiar at the same time. And this fairy tale truly deserves such a careful treatment, because the story is still meaningful today.

The eternal struggle between good and evil is decided by two children: Through the power of his mirror, which makes everyone see only the ugly in the world, the devil has frozen the heart of the snow queen and turned her whole country to ice. Only a small house and its inhabitants have remained of her former green paradise. They are immune to the power of the devil.

But then Kai smashes the devil's mirror. A splinter flies into his eye, and suddenly he too can no longer see beauty. Kai is only happy when everything is white. And so he follows the Snow Queen, who loves him, to her palace of ice. Gerda senses that Kai is in danger and wants to free him. On the way to the palace she has to overcome the obstacles which the devil puts in her way.

What is beautiful and what is ugly? What is good and what is evil? What is love and what is desire? The Snow Queen describes a development process. In the end there comes a warming realization.
