Europe is in a state of emergency, Germany is sinking into fear. The terror comes nearer; there is a string of sexual assaults by immigrants on New Year’s Eve; right-wing parties are again very popular. Falk Richter reminds us of Rainer Werner Fassbinder, who, in 1977 in the context of the RAF terror, responded with the film Deutschland im Herbst. Parallels become visible: the desire for an authoritarian ruler who will solve the unmanageable political situation in Europe without turning Europe into ruins.
