In the late 14th century, robber baron Eppelein von Gailingen is a wanted man. Chivalry is no longer as sexy as it was in centuries past. So the disappointed once-nobleman wades through his own swamp of ego – driven only by his faith in another – a free world. In feudal Franconia, however, everyone flits between property and non-property like tadpoles in a moat. While the nobility build castles in the air, the peasants and servants languish. Is there a way to rewrite history?
When Eppelein is sentenced to death by the burgrave and imprisoned, he manages a spectacular escape with the help of the three witches Teremin, Lola and Hanne. A legendary move that goes down in history. What is not known, however, is that Eppelein, together with the witches, founded the Drive-By Squad to smash the ruling power structures.
In his debut play, Joshua Groß looks at our present through the lens of the past. In expansive, reflective and witty language, he explores the question of which actors ‘make history’ and who shapes our thinking about property, power and work:
‘How can the world (or property) be fundamentally re-told without it becoming distorted? Or how can it be distorted so that property is redistributed and no longer fixed?’ (Joshua Groß)
