„An old woman stands in her bathroom. By accident she saw herself naked in the mirror today, she tells us. Normally she makes sure that she dresses in the dark. And then, with great indifference, her comment: ‘disgusting’. Such moments of illusion and desillusion is what the play BEFORE / AFTER is about which the author and dramaturg Roland Schimmelpfennig wrote for the festival Frankfurter Positionen (financed by the BHF-Bank-Stiftung) and which now received its first staged reading at the TAT (Theater am Turm, Frankfurt).
At first sight the scenes seem to follow each other without any connection between them. The protagonists seem caught up in their loneliness and sadness. The older ones look back at their lives, the younger ones hide from reality or despair of it. Couples seem to know deep down that men and women don’t belong together, and still they delay the separation from their partners for as long as possible. Melancholy pervades the images…
After a while, the spectator begins to take up traces and to follow them. There is, for instance, the young woman who cheats on her boyfried for the first time after eleven years. It is her sudden interest in a book about Matthias Grünewald which betrays her…” (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung)
