Wach auf und träume recounts Peer Gynt’s adventure from two interchanging, increasingly connected perspectives – the story of the boy and that of the old man. Therefore, the main character is played by two actors. The young Peer and his old version sometimes meet, like body and shadow, in a story that provides a shared space for continents and seas, past and present, mythos and reality. Additionally, characters introduced later in the play (and doubling of roles) are reminiscent of other people who have previously appeared in Peer Gynt’s life, just as familiar, transmuted motifs reveal the old Scandinavian folk tale and Henrik Ibsen’s story of Peer Gynt as poetic quotes, as a beautiful legend.
