Moritz Franz Beichl

Moritz Franz Beichl (born in Vienna in 1992) is an author and theatre director. He began his career at the age of 19 with an internship at the Burgtheater in Vienna. He then studied directing at the Theatre Academy in Hamburg. His production of kleinstadtnovelle was invited to various festivals, including the KÖRBER STUDIO JUNGE REGIE. Beichl is the winner of the START OFF competition and has been invited twice to the HART AM WIND Festival, where he won prizes for both productions. In 2019, Beichl received the NESTROY PRIZE and various scholarships, including the DRAMA SCHOLARSHIP from the Austrian Federal Ministry of Culture. In 2022, his debut novel Die Abschaffung der Wochentage (The Abolition of Weekdays) will be published by Residenz Verlag, as well as the queer-feminist comedy rewrite Effi, Ach, Effi Briest (Effi, Oh Effi Briest) by S. Fischer Verlag.


Beichl is resident director at the DT GÖTTINGEN and directs at the Schauspielhaus Hamburg, Staatstheater Braunschweig, Bronski & Grünberg in Vienna and the Landestheater Niederösterreich, among others. In addition to world premieres, novel adaptations and productions of his own texts, Moritz Franz Beichl is primarily concerned with contemporary reinterpretations of classic texts such as Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, Schiller's The Robbers and Büchner's Woyzeck.
