In the steelworkers' city of Linz, people are suffocating. And whoever doesn’t suffocate immediately is shot or shoots themselves. Only jobless Rudl rebels. He puts up a wooden fence around his family’s allotment, because he wants to save himself and his family from death. But the family doesn’t want to escape from their perceived destiny, they even help things along if necessary. Convinced of the rightfulness and necessity of his behaviour, the father first shoots the “suffocating” mayor. Afterwards, his wife and his son Otto help by administering the coup de grâce to the struggling daughter-in-law. Otto and his father shoot themselves afterwards. The mother finally suffocates. Rudl stays behind alone.
