Andres Veiel

Andres Veiel, born 1959 in Stuttgart, is one of Germany’s most renowned film and theatre directors. After studying psychology and directing at Künstlerhaus Bethanien under the direction of Polish director Kieslowski, he has been working as a writer and director on film and theater projects since 1990, which are situated between documentation and fiction. For his films Winternachtstraum (1991), Balagan (1993), Die Überlebenden (1996), Black Box BRD (2001), Die Spielwütigen (2004), Der Kick (2006), Who if not us (2011) he has received more than forty national and international awards, including several times the German Film Prize and the European Film Prize.
The play Der Kick, which Andres Veiel wrote together with Gesine Schmidt, has been translated into eight languages and performed on more than 50 stages. The production under his direction (world premiere at the Theater Basel and Maxim Gorki Theater, Berlin) was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen in 2006. In 2012 he wrote his play Das Himbeerreich, which was premiered in January 2013 at the Stuttgart Staatsschauspiel and the Deutsches Theater Berlin under his direction.
In 2017 Andres Veiel developed an interdisciplinary, participatory research and theater project on the question What future?! together with the author Jutta Doberstein, from which the play Let Them Eat Money was developed, which premiered in 2018 at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin under his own direction.
Andres Veiel is a member of the German as well as the European Film Academy and the Academy of Arts.
